When it comes to managing insurance coverage, finding common ground is simple: we should just agree to disagree. Whether patient or practitioner, opinions are strong as to which insurance to purchase, which insurance to bill, and which politician is talking the best talk about what is working. Optometry doesn’t seem immune to any of it, and many practices face tough choices on how best to navigate the confusing matrix of carriers and coverage. I’ve worked in both settings – offices that do and don’t bill insurance – and certainly have an affinity for the latter. At the end of it all though, the haze of confusion seems to be the primary weapon of insurance companies, as they continue to be a billion dollar industry, benefiting fully from paying pennies on the dollar to practitioners for services rendered.
