the end of an era…

If anyone were to construct a shortlist of the finest Vision Therapists to emerge over the last 10 years, Samantha “Sam” Caldwell COVT would definitely be included.  A fixture at Alderwood Vision Therapy Center of Lynnwood, WA – the office of Dr. Nancy Torgerson – for the last 11 ½ years, Sam has improved hundreds of lives with her gifts in the Vision Therapy room.  Always a pleasure to visit with at any conference she attended, Sam proudly received the COVT of the Year award in 2011 at COVD’s Annual Meeting in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Those of us who know Sam were sad to learn of her decision to leave the Vision Therapy world this week.  Sam plans to head back to school for a degree in Health Informatics and IT; the goal being able to provide/design/utilize technology and systems to help create better patient care.  Although a tough loss for our community, many of her fellow therapists and friends in VT are very happy and excited for her, as she moves into the next phase of her life.

Dr. Nancy Torgerson writes:

Sam will be greatly missed at AVTC.  Sam truly cares about her patients, from the youngest (4months old) to the oldest (86 years young).  The youngest patient started when she was 4 months old and we all marveled at her transformation as her visual challenges decreased.  Sam loved sharing the joy of the amusing things her patients would do and say.  One dressed up as a different princess each vision therapy visit.   One patient thought that her time with Sam was actually a play date and was not amused when the vision therapy time was over.  She couldn’t believe that Sam needed to see someone else because it was their play date.  Then there was one patient that said, Sam is really a dentist, she really isn’t a Vision Therapist, because this couldn’t be a real job.

Sam was always willing to help with the challenging patients with a smile and not get rattled with the unique demographic that we see.

Sam has a million and one questions and loves making a difference in people’s lives.  I will miss Sam’s ability to translate my noises to words during demonstrations to parents and team members alike.  We will miss Sam but wish her the very best life has to offer!

In one of her recent Facebook posts, Sam wrote:

The end of an era…11.5 years actually. Goodbye, Alderwood Vision Therapy Center. Thanks for being so awesome.

No, Sam.  Thank you.

  1. Oh say it’s not true!! I’ve been privileged to be in training classes taught by Sam and Dr. Torgerson. Those classes were always tremendous….I’m feeling sad for Dr. Torgerson and her staff as well. Does anyone know if the Estes Park session for this coming weekend has been moved or cancelled due to flooding? As sad as I am for the VT community, I know I join many in wishing Sam the best in her new career. She’ll be great with IT/Health Infomatics too. I just hope they have some princesses to share with her. Best, Jenni Roeber, COVT Basalt, CO
